Overview

Rhinoplasty is surgery to change the shape, size or internal structure of the nose. It may address the bridge, the tip, the nostrils, the angle between the nose and upper lip, or internal features affecting breathing. Some procedures are primarily aesthetic, some primarily functional, and many are both.

Technique varies. An open approach uses a small incision across the columella; a closed approach works entirely within the nostrils. Which is appropriate depends on the anatomy involved and the change being considered, and is a decision for your treating surgeon.

Who might consider this procedure?

People commonly discuss rhinoplasty with a clinician when they are concerned about the proportion or profile of the nose, a visible asymmetry, the appearance of the tip or bridge, or the effects of a previous injury. Others raise it in connection with breathing difficulty, where a functional element may be involved.

Final suitability is determined during clinical consultation. Facial structure, skin thickness, nasal anatomy, age and general health all bear on whether a procedure is appropriate and what it can realistically address.

Recovery considerations

Recovery varies by individual and by the extent of the surgery. A splint is typically worn for the first week. Swelling and bruising around the eyes are usual in the early period and settle gradually.

The nose continues to refine over an extended period — often many months — and the final appearance is not apparent immediately. Your treating clinician will advise how long you should remain locally, when normal activity may resume, and when you may be medically fit to fly.
