Overview

A facelift — rhytidectomy — repositions the deeper tissues of the mid and lower face and removes excess skin. Contemporary technique focuses on the underlying muscular layer rather than skin tension alone, which is what distinguishes a natural result from a drawn one.

The extent varies considerably. A more limited procedure may address the jawline and lower face; a fuller one extends further. It is frequently combined with a neck lift, and sometimes with eyelid or brow surgery. Your treating surgeon will advise which combination, if any, is appropriate.

Who might consider this procedure?

People typically discuss a facelift when facial tissue has begun to descend, when the jawline has lost definition, or when folds around the mouth and cheeks have deepened in a way that no longer reflects how they feel.

Suitability depends on skin quality, underlying bone structure, general health and whether expectations are realistic. A facelift addresses laxity and position. It does not address skin texture, pigmentation or volume loss, which are different concerns with different treatments.

Recovery considerations

Recovery is more involved than for most facial procedures. Swelling and bruising are pronounced in the first two weeks and settle over subsequent weeks. Numbness around the incisions and ears is usual and resolves gradually. Drains and dressings may be used initially.

Most people are not comfortable in public for a period measured in weeks rather than days. Your treating clinician will advise on the recovery timeline and when you may be medically fit to travel.
