Overview

Revision rhinoplasty is surgery performed after a previous nasal procedure. It is technically more demanding than primary rhinoplasty: scar tissue is present, the original anatomy has been altered, and cartilage available for structural support may be reduced. Grafting is more frequently required.

Because of this, revision cases warrant particular scrutiny of the surgeon's specific experience with secondary work, and often more detailed pre-operative assessment than a first procedure.

Who might consider this procedure?

People typically raise revision rhinoplasty with a clinician when they are dissatisfied with the result of an earlier procedure, when breathing has been affected, or when the nose has changed as it healed in a way they had not anticipated.

Timing matters. Surgeons generally prefer that tissues have fully settled before reoperating, which usually means a substantial interval after the original surgery. Your treating clinician will advise whether enough time has passed and whether revision is appropriate at all.

Recovery considerations

Recovery follows a broadly similar pattern to primary rhinoplasty, though swelling can be more persistent and the refinement period longer. Where cartilage has been taken from elsewhere — the ear or a rib — there is an additional site to heal.

Your treating clinician will advise on activity, follow-up and when you may be medically fit to travel.
