Overview

Blepharoplasty is surgery to the eyelids. Upper blepharoplasty removes excess skin, and sometimes a small amount of muscle or fat, from the upper lid. Lower blepharoplasty addresses the area beneath the eye, where the concern is more often contour and fat distribution than skin alone.

The two are distinct procedures and are sometimes carried out together. Incisions are usually placed in the natural lid crease or, for some lower-lid techniques, inside the lid.

Who might consider this procedure?

People commonly discuss blepharoplasty when excess upper-lid skin has begun to affect the appearance of the eyes, or in some cases the field of vision, and when the under-eye area no longer reflects how rested they feel.

An assessment will consider eyelid position, brow position, tear production and general eye health. Sometimes what appears to be an eyelid concern is more accurately a brow one, and the consultation exists partly to establish that distinction.

Recovery considerations

Bruising and swelling around the eyes are usual in the first one to two weeks. Vision may be temporarily blurred, and eyes can feel dry or sensitive to light. Sutures are typically removed within the first week.

Your treating clinician will advise on eye care, when screen use and normal activity may resume, and when you may be medically fit to travel.
