Otoplasty

Otoplasty reshapes or repositions the ears. Most commonly it addresses ears that project further from the head than the patient would like, by reshaping the cartilage and, where needed, creating or refining the antihelical fold. It can also address size, asymmetry between the two ears, or the shape of the earlobe.

Incisions are usually placed behind the ear. It is one of the more predictable facial procedures, though as with any surgery, individual outcomes vary.

People commonly discuss otoplasty when prominent ears have been a long-standing concern, when the two ears differ noticeably, or when they would like more freedom in how they wear their hair.

Assessment considers cartilage thickness and flexibility, the existing folds, and the relationship between the ears and the rest of the head. Your treating clinician will advise on suitability.

A supportive headband is typically worn continuously for an initial period, then at night for several weeks. The ears are usually tender and swollen at first, and sleeping position may need adjusting.
