Chin Procedures

Chin procedures alter the projection, height or width of the chin in order to change facial proportion. Two broad approaches exist: an implant placed over the existing bone, or a sliding genioplasty, in which the bone itself is cut and repositioned.

Implants are less invasive; genioplasty allows movement in more than one direction and avoids introducing an implant. Which is appropriate depends on the degree and direction of change being considered, and is a matter for your treating surgeon.

People often discuss chin surgery in the context of profile balance — when the chin appears to sit back relative to the nose and lips, or when the jawline lacks definition even at a stable weight.

It is frequently considered alongside rhinoplasty, since the two features read together in profile. Assessment will consider dental occlusion, jaw position and soft tissue, and your treating clinician may involve a dental or maxillofacial opinion where bite is a factor.

Swelling around the chin and lower lip is usual for the first weeks. Numbness of the lower lip and chin is common early on and typically resolves, though it can take time. A soft diet and restricted facial movement may be advised initially.
