Overview

Implant revision covers a range of secondary procedures: exchanging implants for a different size or type, correcting position, releasing or removing capsule tissue that has tightened around an implant, or removing implants altogether with or without a lift.

Breast implants are not lifetime devices. Revision is a recognised part of having them, not an indication that something has gone wrong. What is appropriate in a given case depends on what is present, and requires assessment — often including imaging — by your treating surgeon.

Who might consider this procedure?

People typically discuss revision when implants have hardened or changed shape, when position has altered, when they wish to change size, when an implant is thought to have failed, or when they would like implants removed entirely.

Assessment considers the implants in place, the state of the surrounding capsule, tissue coverage and skin quality. Your treating clinician will advise on suitability and on whether additional procedures — such as a lift — would be needed at the same time.

Recovery considerations

Recovery varies considerably with what is done. A straightforward exchange may be comparable to the original surgery; capsule work or removal with a lift is more involved and may include drains.

Your treating clinician will advise on garment use, activity, follow-up and when you may be medically fit to travel.
