Overview

Breast augmentation increases breast volume, most commonly using implants and in some cases using the patient's own fat. Where implants are used, several decisions follow: material and fill, shape, profile, size, the plane in which the implant sits relative to the chest muscle, and incision placement.

These are clinical decisions made with your treating surgeon based on your existing anatomy — chest width, tissue thickness, breast position and skin quality — not on a size chosen in advance.

Who might consider this procedure?

People commonly discuss augmentation when they feel breast volume is disproportionate to their frame, when volume has reduced following pregnancy, breastfeeding or weight loss, or where there is a noticeable difference between the two sides.

Suitability depends on tissue quality, chest anatomy, general health and realistic expectations of what implants can and cannot achieve. Implants are not lifetime devices; your treating clinician will explain the likelihood of further surgery at some point.

Recovery considerations

A supportive garment is usually worn for several weeks. Discomfort and tightness across the chest are usual in the early days, particularly where an implant sits beneath the muscle. Lifting and overhead movement are typically restricted at first.

Implants settle into position over subsequent weeks and months. Your treating clinician will advise on garment use, activity, follow-up and when you may be medically fit to travel.
