Overview
A breast lift, or mastopexy, raises and reshapes the breast by removing excess skin and repositioning the remaining tissue and the nipple. It addresses position rather than volume: a lift alone will not make the breast larger.
Incision patterns vary with the degree of lift required — from a limited incision around the areola for minor correction, through to a vertical or anchor pattern where more skin must be removed. Scarring is a necessary consequence, and your treating surgeon will explain what pattern your case would require.
Who might consider this procedure?
People typically discuss a lift when breast position has changed following pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight loss or over time, when the nipple sits low relative to the breast fold, or when the two sides differ in position.
Where volume as well as position is a concern, a lift is sometimes combined with implants. Whether that combination is appropriate — and whether it is better staged across two operations — is a decision for your treating clinician.
Recovery considerations
A supportive garment is usually worn for several weeks. Swelling and altered nipple sensation are usual early on, and sensation may take months to settle. Scars are red or raised initially and mature over a year or more.
Your treating clinician will advise on garment use, scar care, activity and when you may be medically fit to travel.
