Breast Reduction

Breast reduction removes breast tissue, fat and skin to reduce volume, and reshapes and repositions what remains. Because it lifts as well as reduces, it incorporates the elements of a mastopexy.

Reduction is frequently sought for physical reasons as much as aesthetic ones — neck, shoulder and back discomfort, difficulty with exercise, skin irritation beneath the breast. Your treating clinician will discuss how much tissue removal is appropriate and what effect it may have on sensation and on breastfeeding.

People commonly discuss reduction when breast size is causing physical discomfort, restricting activity, making clothing difficult, or affecting posture.

Assessment considers breast size and composition, skin quality, general health and, where relevant, plans for future pregnancy. Your treating clinician will advise on suitability and on the trade-offs involved, including scarring.

A supportive garment is usually worn for several weeks. There is typically an immediate sense of physical relief, alongside the usual surgical swelling and discomfort. Sensation changes are common and may be temporary or lasting.
