Overview

Fat transfer harvests fat from one area by liposuction, processes it, and reinjects it where additional volume is wanted. It is used in facial procedures, in some breast work, and in body contouring.

Not all transferred fat survives. A proportion is reabsorbed over the first months, the amount varies between individuals, and results are correspondingly less predictable than with implants. More than one session is sometimes needed. Your treating surgeon will explain the expected retention and what that means for planning.

Who might consider this procedure?

People commonly discuss fat transfer when they would prefer to use their own tissue rather than an implant, when volume is wanted in one area and reduction in another, or where a previous procedure has left a contour irregularity.

Suitability depends on having sufficient fat available to harvest, on skin quality at the recipient site, and on general health. Where the procedure involves injection into or near the buttock, your treating clinician should discuss the specific and well-documented risks associated with that technique, and the safety protocols their practice follows.

Recovery considerations

There are two recovery sites: where fat was taken and where it was placed. Compression is worn over the donor area. Pressure on the recipient area is usually restricted, which for buttock procedures means restrictions on sitting for a defined period.

Your treating clinician will advise on positioning, activity, follow-up and when you may be medically fit to travel.
