Overview

Abdominoplasty removes excess skin and fat from the abdomen and, where the abdominal muscles have separated, repairs that separation. The extent varies: a limited procedure addresses the area below the navel only, while a full abdominoplasty addresses the whole abdominal wall and usually repositions the navel.

Muscle repair is a significant element. Where separation has occurred — commonly after pregnancy — no amount of exercise closes it, and this is often the reason exercise alone has not produced the change a patient expected.

Who might consider this procedure?

People commonly discuss abdominoplasty after pregnancy or significant weight loss, when loose skin remains at a stable weight, or when abdominal muscle separation is affecting core strength and posture.

Suitability depends on weight being stable, on general health, on smoking status, and on whether further pregnancies are planned. Your treating clinician will advise on all of these, and may recommend deferring surgery.

Recovery considerations

Abdominoplasty involves one of the longer recoveries in body surgery. Movement is restricted at first and patients typically stand and walk in a slightly flexed position for several days. Drains and a compression garment are usual. Lifting and exercise are restricted for a period of weeks.

This is the category where recovery accommodation and local transport matter most. Your treating clinician will advise on activity, follow-up and when you may be medically fit to fly.
