Overview

Liposuction removes localised deposits of fat through small incisions, using a cannula to break up and draw out fat beneath the skin. Techniques vary — tumescent, ultrasound-assisted, power-assisted — and your treating surgeon will explain which they use and why.

It is a contouring procedure, not a weight-loss one. It removes fat from specific areas; it does not treat loose skin, and where skin quality is poor, removing volume beneath it can make laxity more apparent rather than less.

Who might consider this procedure?

People typically discuss liposuction when specific areas have not responded to diet and exercise despite overall weight being stable — commonly the flanks, outer thighs, upper arms, back or beneath the chin.

Suitability depends on skin elasticity, the nature and location of the fat, general health and stable weight. Your treating clinician will advise whether liposuction alone is appropriate or whether skin removal would also be required to achieve the change being discussed.

Recovery considerations

A compression garment is worn for several weeks. Swelling, bruising and firmness in the treated areas are usual and settle over a period of months; the final contour is not apparent immediately.

Manual lymphatic drainage is commonly recommended in Colombia as part of post-operative care, and where your clinician advises it, BTX can help schedule sessions. Your treating clinician will advise on garment use, activity and when you may be medically fit to travel.
