Overview

A body lift removes excess skin circumferentially around the lower trunk — abdomen, hips, flanks, outer thighs and buttocks — in a single operation. It is among the most extensive procedures in body surgery and is most often considered after substantial weight loss.

Because the incision runs the full way around, operating time is long and the physiological demand is significant. Your treating surgeon will assess whether it is safe to carry out in one stage or whether the work should be divided.

Who might consider this procedure?

People considering a body lift have usually lost a large amount of weight, whether through bariatric surgery or otherwise, and are left with excess skin around the whole lower trunk that no single-area procedure would resolve.

Assessment is thorough. It considers weight stability over time, nutritional status — which is frequently affected after bariatric surgery — smoking status, general health and the ability to tolerate a long operation. Your treating clinician may require blood work and a period of documented weight stability before proceeding.

Recovery considerations

Recovery is extended and requires genuine support. Mobility is significantly restricted in the first days, drains are usual, and wound healing needs close monitoring given the length of the incision.

Recovery accommodation, transport and post-operative support are not optional extras for this procedure. Your treating clinician will advise on the recovery timeline and on when you may be medically fit to fly, which is typically later than for other body procedures.
