Overview

An arm lift, or brachioplasty, removes excess skin and fat from the upper arm and tightens the underlying tissue. Where laxity is limited, the incision may be confined to the underarm; where more skin must be removed, it extends along the inner arm from underarm to elbow.

The trade-off is explicit and worth understanding before proceeding: an arm lift exchanges loose skin for a scar in a position that is not easily concealed in short sleeves. Your treating surgeon will explain what incision your case would require.

Who might consider this procedure?

People commonly discuss an arm lift following significant weight loss, or where upper-arm skin has lost elasticity over time and has not responded to exercise.

Assessment considers the amount and distribution of excess skin, fat volume, skin quality and general health. Where the concern is primarily fat rather than skin, your treating clinician may advise that liposuction alone is more appropriate.

Recovery considerations

Compression sleeves are usually worn for several weeks. Arm movement is restricted at first, and lifting is limited for a period. Swelling in the hands and forearms is common early on.

Scars are red and raised initially and mature over a year or more. Your treating clinician will advise on scar care, activity and when you may be medically fit to travel.
