Overview

Veneers are thin facings bonded to the front of the teeth to change colour, shape, alignment or proportion. Porcelain veneers are made in a laboratory and bonded at a second appointment; composite veneers are built directly onto the tooth in a single visit.

Most porcelain veneers require some removal of enamel, which is irreversible: once prepared, a tooth will always need a covering of some kind. Minimal-preparation options exist for some cases. Your treating dentist will explain what preparation your teeth would require and why.

Who might consider this procedure?

People commonly discuss veneers in relation to discolouration that does not respond to whitening, chips or wear, small gaps, or teeth that are uneven in shape or proportion.

Assessment considers the health of the underlying teeth and gums, bite, enamel thickness and habits such as grinding. Where alignment is the main concern, your treating dentist may advise orthodontic treatment first — or instead — rather than masking the position with veneers.

Recovery considerations

There is no surgical recovery. Temporary veneers are usually worn between preparation and fitting, and teeth can be sensitive during that interval and for a short period afterwards.

The practical consideration is scheduling: preparation and fitting are separate appointments, and the laboratory stage sits between them. Your treating dentist will confirm the interval, which shapes the length of your stay.
