Dental Implants

A dental implant is a post placed into the jawbone, which integrates with the bone over a period of months and then supports a crown, bridge or denture. It replaces the root of a missing tooth rather than resting on adjacent teeth.

The process is inherently staged. Placement, integration and restoration are separate phases, and integration commonly takes several months. Where bone volume is insufficient, grafting may be required first, adding a further stage. Some cases allow immediate temporary restoration; many do not.

People typically discuss implants where a tooth is missing or unrestorable, where an existing bridge or denture is no longer satisfactory, or where multiple teeth need replacing.

Assessment requires imaging — usually a CT scan — to establish bone volume and the position of nerves and sinuses. Gum health, smoking status, diabetes control and grinding all bear on suitability. Your treating dentist will advise on all of these before proposing a plan.

Discomfort and swelling after placement are usually modest and settle within days. A soft diet is advised initially. Bone grafting extends this.

The significant consideration is the interval between stages. Implant treatment abroad almost always requires more than one visit, and the schedule should be established before the first trip so that travel can be planned around it.
