Cosmetic dentistry covers treatments where appearance is the primary aim: professional whitening, enamel contouring to refine the shape of the edges, gum reshaping where the gum line is uneven or teeth appear short, and replacement of visible older restorations with tooth-coloured alternatives.

These are generally less invasive than veneers or crowns, and are often used in combination. Your treating dentist will advise which, if any, address the concern you have raised.

People commonly discuss cosmetic dentistry for discolouration, an uneven gum line, slightly irregular edges, or visible metal restorations from earlier treatment.

Assessment establishes that the teeth and gums are healthy first. Whitening is not appropriate where there is untreated decay or gum disease, and its effect on existing crowns, veneers or fillings — which do not whiten — has to be planned for. Your treating dentist will explain the sequence.

There is generally no recovery period. Sensitivity following whitening is common for a short time. Gum reshaping involves a brief healing period.
