Overview

Laser and energy-based treatments use light or radiofrequency to target a specific structure in the skin. Different devices address different concerns: resurfacing lasers for texture and fine lines, pigment-specific lasers for sun damage, vascular lasers for redness and visible vessels, and others for hair reduction.

Ablative resurfacing removes the surface layer and involves genuine downtime. Non-ablative devices work beneath the surface with less visible recovery but usually require a course. The choice of device is a clinical one.

Who might consider this procedure?

People commonly discuss laser treatment for sun damage, pigmentation, redness, visible vessels, acne scarring, textural change or unwanted hair.

Skin type is central to this assessment. Some devices carry a significantly higher risk of burns or pigmentary change in deeper skin tones, and appropriate device selection and test patching are essential rather than optional. Recent sun exposure, tanning, certain medications and a history of cold sores all affect suitability. Your treating practitioner will assess these before proceeding.

Recovery considerations

Recovery ranges from hours to a couple of weeks depending on the device and settings. Redness, swelling, crusting or peeling may follow. Strict sun avoidance is required afterwards — a real consideration given the UV levels in Colombia, particularly at Bogotá's altitude.

Your practitioner will advise on aftercare, on intervals between sessions, and on when further treatment is appropriate.
