Overview

Injectable treatments fall into two broad groups. Muscle-relaxing injections temporarily reduce movement in specific facial muscles, softening the lines that movement creates. Dermal fillers, most commonly hyaluronic acid based, add volume or support to a particular area.

Both are temporary and require repeating to maintain an effect. Neither is trivial. Fillers in particular carry recognised risks, including vascular complications, which is why the qualification of the person injecting and the facility's ability to manage a complication both matter.

Who might consider this procedure?

People commonly discuss injectables for expression lines, volume loss in the mid-face or lips, or contour concerns around the jaw and chin.

Assessment considers facial anatomy, previous treatments — including any permanent or semi-permanent filler, which materially affects what can safely be done — medical history and expectations. Your treating practitioner will advise on what is appropriate, on longevity, and on what the treatment cannot address.

Recovery considerations

Downtime is generally short. Redness, small bruises and swelling at injection sites are usual and settle within days. Filler results are immediate but continue to settle over a couple of weeks; muscle-relaxing injections take several days to take effect.

Because bruising is possible, timing matters if you have commitments soon after. Your practitioner will advise on aftercare and on when a review appointment is appropriate.
